I finished Uta no Oniisan yesterday. I was so afraid they’d end on a down beat but they didn’t. I’m glad the über-genki guy mellowed out and that everyone grew the hell up. The one thing I couldn’t tell was whether Sakura and the worker guy (whose name I obviously never caught) got together. I was a little shocked when they showed Kenta praying to the picture of his dad, but then it turned out he was just joking around. Still...ちょっとショックでした.

I also finished watching Kami no Shizuku. This one I didn’t understand at all. First, how do you not know you have an adopted brother (who then turns out to actually be your brother from another mother)? How exactly does that happen? Maybe they explained that, but I just don’t understand enough Japanese. Other things I don’t understand include what exactly Saionji and Sara’s respective motivations were in the show. Again, I probably just don’t know enough Japanese, but it wasn’t really obvious from the way they acted. At first Saionji was acting all devious, but then by the end she turned out to be a decent person. Was that because she got pregnant by Tomine? Or what? And how the hell did that buy running the wine bar stay in business with such a tiny space and apparently no customers other than the main characters in the drama?

Right now I’m watching an older show called Hotaru no Hikari. Seems to be based on a manga. It’s cute. It’s about a woman named Hotaru who’s not worried about getting married or having a boyfriend. She dresses well for work, but at home she’s a real slob. Then her boss shows up in her house. Turns out his wife has filed for a divorce, and his father owns the house Hotaru lives in, and so he came to live there, not knowing it was occupied. He moves into a spare bedroom and they divide the house. Hilarity ensues. To complicate matters, Hotaru is interested in a designer at work, but she has no idea how to deal with him or her feelings for him. More hilarity. I’m waiting on episode 7 to finish downloading. I expect I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to finish the show, but here’s how I think things are going to play out. 7 and 8 will deal with her and her relationship with the designer, Makoto. Then in 9 she’ll have to face up to the fact that she’s actually in love with her boss and that he’s in love with her. Then in episode 10 everything will get resolved and everything will work out absolutely perfectly to everyone’s satisfaction. Hotaru will wind up with Seiichi (the boss) and Yuuka will wind up with Makoto. But I could be wrong.

I also started watching Around 40. Why? Because of Amaki Yuki and Matsushita Yuki. Two actresses my age who are both beautiful AND good actors. Love ‘em. Saw Matsushita in Shiawase ni Naritai (which also starred Fukuda Kyouko, who I don’t like) and she really made the show for me. It’s about a doctor (Amaki) who’s about to turn 40, and about all the pressure for her to get settle down and get married.

Marriage seems to be a big deal in these dramas. Women are expected to work until they lands them a MAY-UN! and then settle down to make babies and do the whole housewife routine. Nice work if you can get it. Is there this much emphasis on finding a man to take care of you and getting married in American media? I don’t watch much TV, so I don’t have much to go on here.

Anyway, after this I have a whole raft of other shows to watch, and that’s not even taking into account the bajillion new shows which will be starting in a week or two as the new spring season of dramas gets underway in Japan.

One nice thing is that I’m starting to understand a lot more than I did before. I could always muddle my way through the shows without subtitles, but it’s getting a little easier now. I hope that soon I’ll be able to watch an entire show and understand most of it. That would be purely awesome.
