OK, I finished the list and Travis has posted it on his journal. Go, shop, buy, help me get a new computer!

OK, right now I am writing up the rest of my CDs for Travis to post for sale. I'll post a link to the list when he gets it posted, which should be later tonight.

You might wonder why I'm doing this. Well, it's not because I've suddenly become one of those "CDs are dead media walking" types, or because I want that tiny sliver of my room back. It's because I really, REALLY want a new computer, and the more money I save up, the sooner I can get the darn thing, and the happier I'll be.

So dig deep and help a sister out, wouldja please?

ALSO! I have to do a survey for my Japanese class. This, too, will be posted on Travis's journal simply because he's got a paid account and I do not. :) Again, the link will be forthcoming sometime this afternoon or evening.

The Haul

Got a great stack of CDs today.

Anri - 16th Summer Breeze
Charcoal Filter - Charcoal Filter
Gotou Maki - ‘Ken & Mary no Meriken Ko’ On Stage (which appears to be the soundtrack to a play or film she was in)
Grass Valley - Moon Voice
Kix’s - One Night Heaven
Nakajima Miyuki - Inochi no Betsumei
Nakajima Miyuki - Aijou Monogatari
Ohguro Maki - Back Beats #2
Ohguro Maki - Rhythm Black
Pe’z - Hanasaku Don Bla Go!
Pe’z - Suzumushi
Yum! Yum! Orange - Jelly Beans

Three of those are used (Anri, Kix’s and Grass Valley) and the rest are new. Except for the Nakajima Miyuki CDs and one of the Pe’z CDs, they were all $3. Those other three? $1. Hot damn! We went to Book Off and that’s where I found the three used CDs. Then we went over to Marukai so Grace could use the facilities and discovered a huge stack of brand new CDs inside, $3 for albums, $1 for singles. There were a few other albums I wanted, but I think I got enough. Grace also picked up a tribute to a performer known as “Matchy”, better known as Kondou Masahiko.

I realise most of you won’t care, but if anyone has any requests, I’ve got them all ripped and encoded in MP3 format, and I’m happy to share.

Artists: 61
Albums: 146
Tracks: 1,429
Total size is 10.20gb
Total play time is 100 hours (four days plus four hours).

Wow. That was pretty massive. And that brings me halfway (at least as far as the alphabet is concerned, anyway).

The total so far, for A through M is as follows:

Artists: 430
Albums: 791 (note, this also includes singles)
Tracks: 8,985
Size: 64.79gb
Play Time: 625 hours, or twenty-six days plus one hour.

This does include some classical stuff, but mostly it’s rock and pop in various languages (mostly English and Japanese, although I do have a single by German rapper Illo in there, and it’s surprisingly good). Maybe if you’re good and eat all your vegetables I’ll post the album list for you once I’ve gotten everything imported. :)

Artists: 30
Albums: 43
Tracks: 544
Total size is 3.30gb
Total play time is 32 hours, 10 minutes

I got a healthy chunk of the Ms encoded last night, too, up through Me First & The Gimme Gimmes. I wish I had more of their stuff, because they are fantastic. Of course that only represents about 1/3 of the CDs in that section, soooo...

I seem to still be online, which doesn’t tell me much. The computer’s not really running hot right now. It was idling when I came in. I suppose I can fire up Transmission and start seeding again and see how things look when I get home. Since the computer won’t be running under load it won’t overheat and if I get bumped offline Verizon will get an earful.

Why am I up right now instead of sleeping and dreaming about women who say they thought I was pretty bad before they met me and unusual crystalline structures? Simple. I have work that needs doing. I’m driving over to Pasadena. On the way I’m stopping in LA to pick up a lady and her son to take to a doctor in Pasadena. Then I get to sit and twiddle my thumbs until they’re done, and then drive them home again. Sound like fun? Yeah, I don’t think it does either. Still, they’re paying me $125 to do it. Otherwise I’d be down in Lake Forest again today. Instead I’ll be there tomorrow. While it’s nice to be working again, it’d be nicer still to not get ALL this work all at once. Oh well, money’s money.

Why did I not import anything from 16 April until yesterday? I have no idea. I wasn’t really doing much of anything else, so I had plenty of time. *shrug* Anyway, here are the details for K:

Artists: 23
Albums: 51
Tracks: 653
Total size is 4.91gb
Total play time is 47 hours, 19 minutes

I’m almost done ripping the “L”s too, with seven CDs to go. I actually ripped most of it last night, and encoded everything I ripped, but I want to wait for the final tally before boring you good folks with that kind of trivia. :)

Artists: 15
Albums: 17
Tracks: 200

Now for K.

It’s nice to have a reliable optical drive again. I managed to get all of the G, H and I artists imported yesterday. I’ve also added in several albums I’d already imported but forgotten to import into the new library. I think there may be more of those, but I’ll need to spend some time picking them out of the other stuff. So! For now, here are my updated stats.

Full library:

Artists: 293
Albums: 505
Tracks: 5,760
Play Time: 16.7 days/16 days, 17 hours and 59 minutes
Size: 41.65gb

What’s really interesting (well, sort of interesting, I guess, depending on your personality) is seeing how those numbers break down. I’m going to leave out the play time and file size here and just give artist/album/track stats. I wouldn’t have thought I’d have more B- and C-named artists than any other, but those two letters far outstrip any other letter. Crazy. It will be most interesting to see the final numbers when I’m done with this. And if you’re amazed by the sheer volume, don’t be. Remember I’ve been accumulating CDs for something like twenty years, and I’ve got a great source for $1 CDs. Collecting CDs is as close to a hobby as I’ve got. Too bad CDs don’t hold their value very well. Oh well!

Year41

So I’ve been ripping all my CDs. There’s a reason for that, apart from my garden variety insanity. I’ve set up a Wordpress blog called Year41. I’m going to be listening to all my CDs and posting about them there. It’s my goal to listen to every CD in my collection (apart from Grace’s stuff, most of which is unlistenable as far as I’m concerned, which is what she thinks of MY music, so we’re even!) in this, my 41st year on the planet. I’ve got CDs in there I’ve had for more than ten years which I’ve listened to once or twice - or NEVER. I’m gonna rectify that this year. And since I’m going to be posting anyway, I’m putting Amazon affiliate links to the albums. That’s the last I’m going to mention it. I HATE people who shove those affiliate links down your throat.

Anyway, you can find the blog at Year41. I’m no music writer, but maybe that’ll change by next April.

Two things

First, there’s an update for iTunes out. Get it. It fixes the bug that (sometimes) cuts off the last four seconds of a CD. I’m glad I was already planning on re-importing my CDs, because I’ve checked, and I’ve been bitten by this bug. Damnit.

Second, Bob Mould released an album in February. I downloaded it last night. I’m two tracks in and it’s really good so far.

Finished ripping and encoding the “D”s.

Artists: 172
Albums: 299
Tracks: 3,486
Play time: 10 days, 3 hours, 25 minutes
Size: 24.94GB

“D” wasn’t too large. “E” and “F” aren’t very large either. Give my optical drive problem I’m going to stop after finishing with “E” (which has just 9 albums and 3 singles remaining). I’ll have to take a trip to Fry’s tomorrow to see if I can procure a new DVD burner. I’d like to get through “L” ripped by the end of the week, but I’m unwilling to push my internal drive. There’s a chance my problems with it yesterday were caused by it being overheated, but I’d rather not take any chances.

ETA: I just finished ripping the last of the "E" CDs (Everclear's Sparkle and Fade if you must know). I haven't encoded the tracks yet, but here are the other stats for "E":

Artists: 17
Albums: 28
Tracks: 301
Play time: 19 hours, 33 minutes

If it weren't for my DVD burner dying I probably would have finished "F" by now as well. Oh well, there's no real rush.

ETA:

Size: 1.97GB.

Ripping Elastica’s first album my external DVD-RW let out a horrendous crunching noise. And now it doesn’t work. So while my internal drive is dying, my external drive commits suicide by mid-90’s Britpop. I mean, sure, death by Justine Frischmann would be a good way to go, but still...the timing sucks.
seishun: (Default)
I’ve got Terence Trent D’Arby (who’s changed his name to Sananda Maitreya for some reason) slotted in between Daniel Amos and The Darling Buds. iTunes is having none of that, sticking him at the bottom of the list. . Honestly, I’m not sure where he should go but I’m fairly certain it ain’t there. I’m not clear on how to handle names with apostrophes, so I’m soliciting opinions.

And what the hell - while I’ve got your attention, perhaps you can help me decide whether Ben Folds Five should go under “B” or “F”.
seishun: (Default)
As if you cared! Ha! I’m 2/3 of the way through encoding the “C”s. The total for “C” is 60 artists in 108 albums (a few of those are singles, but mostly it’s full-length albums) comprised of 1,273 tracks with a play time of 3 days, 18 hours and 33 minutes. All told we’re facing 145 artists on 253 albums sporting 2,999 tracks with a total play time of 8 days and 15 hours.

And that’s just a through c. I’m going to need a bigger boat.
