seishun: (cooking)
I’ve all but stopped drinking Coke. I still have several bottles of the last flat of Mexican Coke I bought in February, plus I’ve got a couple bottles of the Kosher stuff (which they’re selling for the next week or so for Passover). And while I’m drinking one of those two liters right now (not literally) I’ve really slowed down my overall consumption. I could almost stop drinking it entirely at this point, but I do still enjoy the taste. But what amazes me is that I’ve gone from spending $20+ a week on soda at the beginning of the year to almost nothing a week here in April. I like that. I’m not really sure where that cash is going (probably into our Japan fund, which is hovering around $2,100 right now, w00t!) but I know where it’s NOT going: Atlanta, GA! :)

And I need to start buying up stuff for Sunday. I’ll buy my lamb tomorrow. The local grocery has beautiful legs of Colorado lamb for $8/lb, which yes, is kinda pricey but I don’t mind. It’s a special occasion. I certainly wouldn’t pay that much for an everyday meal (unless I had a seriously good job, which I don’t!). Then on Saturday I need some more of those King Edward potatoes and some fresh peas and a leek or two. The overall menu is this:

Roasted Leg of Lamb with rosemary and garlic
Peas with bacon and caramelised leeks
Roasted Potatoes
Green Salad
Icebox Rolls
Rhubarb Buckle with Vanilla Ice Cream

I think that’s a nice if unambitious menu. Should be more than enough for us. Grandma is bringing the rolls and I’m handling the rest. I was thinking of making minted peas for the meal but I didn’t really like them that much when I made them for us, so that’s out. I’m keeping the peas but changing the mint for bacon and leeks. That ought to do well. I’ll use some of that awesome uncured Niman Ranch applewood smoked bacon they sell at Trader Joe’s.

I’m not quite the entertainment maven that my mother is, but I do enjoy cooking for people, so I’m really looking forward to this. I think I’ll do the buckle on Saturday just so I’m not stuck trying to do everything on Sunday.

And my tomatoes are really doing well! The Zebra is getting really big, and I think the Brandywine will start doing better once it gets acclimated to its new environs. I’ve still got a bunch more to plant though and I need to get out and dig out a big patch for them all. I’ll have next week off for Spring break, so I’ll probably do it on Monday. I don’t want these plants to have to wait much longer to get in the ground. They’re already showing signs of stress from being confined to small planters.
